Returning to Running After Baby

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews as to when someone should start running again after having their little one. I get asked quite often from clients of mine as to when they can start back up again. My answer is the beloved response of, "It depends."

It truly does.

I have clients who start running very early on with no issues whatsoever. I also have clients to try to start running early and notice incontinence or heaviness in their pelvis. The reason it depends is because each person is going to have a different experience and may, or may not, notice symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (gosh I dislike that word...dysfunction).

I recommend my clients wait a minimum 3 months before starting to run again (as per recent research), to allow for the body to get through the start of the healing process. I also recommend they see a pelvic floor physiotherapist prior to starting up again. Other than that, I encourage them to try running and see how it feels, we won't know until you try. Once you have tried and you get the feedback from your body, we can adapt from there :)

This is one of the main reasons why I created my Return to Running Program. I wanted to create a program for anyone to purchase that is filled with education and information about returning to running postpartum that is backed up by research. This program is almost 30 pages long! It has education on diastasis recti, incontinence, and other types of pelvic floor dysfunction (there is that word again) and how these symptoms can impact you getting back into running.

I was proof-reading my program out loud and my son so innocently asked me, "Mommy, do you really expect people to read all this?" My response was, "You bet I do! It's what they are paying for."

This program is not just a quick, "do these movements" and you're good to go back to running. It was built to grow our knowledge about your body and what can occur if you do not take certain steps prior to running after baby.

After the reading portion, you will not only find 2 months of strength workouts specifically designed to strengthen your body and prepare it for running. You will also find stretching, muscle releases, and mobility work to aid your body through this strengthening portion.

To top it all off, you will find a bonus weekly reflection to check in on you and set some goals for the week ahead!

The best part about this program, is that it is also PERFECT for someone who is coming back to running after an injury, a break from running, or is looking to start running! I am also available through email for any questions or modifications that may be needed while you go through the strength portions.

If this sounds like something you would love, head to my website to either sign up to be the first to know when it's released, or check it out!!
