There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews as to when someone should start running again after having their little one. I get asked quite often from clients of mine as to when they can start back up again. My answer is the beloved response of, "It depends."
It truly does.
I have clients who start running very early on with no issues whatsoever. I also have clients to try to start running early and notice incontinence or heaviness in their pelvis. The reason it depends is because each person is going to have a different experience and may, or may not, notice symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (gosh I dislike that word...dysfunction).
I recommend my clients wait a minimum 3 months before starting to run again (as per recent research), to allow for the body to get through the start of the healing process. I also recommend they see a pelvic floor physiotherapist prior to starting up again. Other than that, I encourage them to try running and see how it feels, we won't know until you try. Once you have tried and you get the feedback from your body, we can adapt from there :)
This is one of the main reasons why I created my Return to Running Program.
